Grapes were first planted there in the 70's and it was not officially recognized until 2001, when it received it's American Viticultural Area status. The area is one of America's smallest AVA's, with less then 1000 acreas planted and only 700 are bearing fruit. The vineyards at Red Mountain have high calcium carbonate in their soil, which imparts a distinctive chalkiness to Cabernets. The chalkiness combines with the powerful dark fruit qualities of the grape to create the big, chewy mouth-feel that is a clear signature of Red Mountain Cabernet. Another distinction of a hint of orange peel or Grand Marnier-like aromatics and flavours. Together these two traits make Red Mountain Cabernet immediately recognizable and highly prized.
